Write Page Descriptions For Higher Click Rate & Ranking

brainWebsite writers can improve page rank with well written page descriptions in the content of meta tags.

Page description meta tags have gotten a raw deal

Over the past few years all the attention has gone to the crazy game of back-linking. Many self proclaimed experts have said that meta tags have no affect on page ranking... including page descriptions.

If you have heard this and thought you just had one less thing to work on when writing website content you should think again!

Website Writing should include a page description!

Website writing should always spend time on the page description meta tag for every page. Even if you have dynamically created pages (although this can be more challenging). Don't let your IT gurus tell you its not worth the effort! If you take the extra effort to ensure you can write unique page description for every page of web content dynamic or static you'll be richly rewarded.

Consider this organic search scenario:

  1. Your page is at #4 on page one of Google's search engine results page
  2. Googles's all powerful mathmatic formulas determine that your listing should have and averagae click through rate of 6%
  3. Your page description is so compelling and "clickable" that you beat the average and get an 8% click through rate
  4. Google interprets this as a positive vote (like an inbound link with anchor text) about the relevancy of your page to the search terms
  5. Google will then promote your site up in the ranks (which probably will result in an even higher click through rate and a significant increase in web traffic -- see the chart below for some benchmark averages

I don't know if a click through rate that is below average causes your site to be demoted. If you have any information about this reverse phenomenon please let me know.
