Email Copy Mistake No. 1 - Too Much Personalization

Using too much personalization in your email copy can make you lose the conversational style that is the key to writing successful email promotional copy.

Too Much Personalization In Email Is Unnatural

The copy writing style of your email promotions should be conversational. You want to come across as a real person talking to another real person. So, ask yourself... when you are talking to a person face to face do you use their name over and over? Of course you don't. It would come across as strange and unnatural.

Many email services and software solutions allw you to dynamically insert your customer's name (or other information) into your promotional emails as they go out. Like a mail merge you might do in MS Word. Its a cool technology and because its ther you want to use it. and it can be effective in small doses where appropriate.

But before you start using dynamic insertion to add personalization to your email marketing messages consider this: If you use a person's name over and over in your email writing you are going to make it OBVIOUS that you are not really talking to them as a person. You'll come across as a machine spitting out information from a database.

The use of personalization in email is a temptation because the technology that makes it possible is so fascinating. But proceed with caution - and when in doubt, leavve it out.

The same cautions apply for indiscriminate use of other personal information like company name, birthday, etc.

All 6 Terrible Mistakes You Need To Avoid:

  1. Too much personalization in your email copy
  2. Writing your email copy in an overly formal style
  3. Over using POWER words in your email copy
  4. Writing about too many things in a single email message
  5. Not giving a reason to act in your email promotion
  6. Talking about yourself in your email copy
