Email Subject Lines That Get Opened

get email openedHere is a simple technique you can use to create email subject lines that won't get deleted before they get opened and read...  and to be effective with email marketing you must get your emails opened and read.

Well written email subject lines don't "tell"

You can achieve better open rates for your email promotions simply by making sure your email subject lines introduce your content but do not give the content.  Email subject lines should create a sense of mystery or discovery that compels your reader to click for more information!

Think of your subject line as a headline, a bullet point or a cutline from an article. You want your email subject line to be a teaser that tells recipients what they are going to learn without actually giving them the content.

This is a bit obscure so let’s use an example to illustrate:

“Here’s a simple trick that puts your organic search engine traffic on steroids!”

Why email subject lines that "tell it all" get deleted

When your recipients scan their inbox email subject lines they are looking for a quick summary that allows them to delete the email without further reading or effort. With the above email subject line there is no way they can know in advance what the email message will contain. They are going to have to click to find out.

And clicks are exactly what you want because unless you get recipients to click on and open your email messages you are wasting your time. Because the body of your email is where your links, and other contact info is.

A weak subject line is one that gives away the secret right away. For example:

"Use back-links with keywords to increase your organic search traffic!"

The content of the email may be totally fantastic but there is also no good reason for the reader to open the email to find out more. Its just too easy for your recipient to say " I know that already" and delete. But if your can get them to read your email you have a fighting chance to state your case for what ever product or solution you can offer them to achieve their goals.
